Surrey Wayfinding Scheme

We recently designed a legible wayfinding scheme for Surrey. The scheme was to be rolled out across three towns, with the possibility of further towns being added in the future.

Project scope

Working in partnership with Maynard Design and Atkins we were part of a small team who designed a wayfinding scheme to cover three towns in Surry: Redhill, Woking and Guildford.

The design had to work across three the different towns with different histories and characteristics. The language of the concept had to reflect the overall character of Surrey, but then also fit architecturally into the three varying environments.

The system uses a unified map and core totem colour to provide consistency across the county, but the products also incorporate a ‘town specific’ material to provide individuality for each town. Redhill uses stainless steel, Woking anodised aluminium and Guildford glass reinforced concrete.

Involved in the entire project we designed the overall scheme concept, product concepts and detailed product design. We then worked closely with the manufacturer to ensure the design retained the original design intent.

The scheme was manufactured and installed in 2015.
